🌿 A Brilliant Day at the Old Double Lock! 🌿
A huge thank you to the 20+ volunteers who gave up their time yesterday — a fantastic 74+ volunteer hours in total! 👏

The team worked hard clearing vegetation around the lock, uncovering the bywash entrance, and opening up an overflow to the Blackbrook by the Green Bridge.

There were also some fantastic historical discoveries along the way. 🏛️

📜 A little history:
The Old Double Lock dates back to 1757 and was the first staircase lock in Britain. In 1770, it became a canal junction.

Yesterday, we revealed the coping stones of the canal “main line” heading towards St Helens, along with an 1885 date stone. This dates from when the lock was rebuilt by the London & North Western Railway Company, following problems caused by chemical pollution.

It’s brilliant to see more of this fascinating piece of local canal history being uncovered and brought back into view. 💚
