We’re a passionate team dedicated to restoring the historic Sankey Canal and ensuring everyone can enjoy the Sankey Valley Linear Park.
Founded in 1985, the Sankey Canal Restoration Society (SCRS) works to protect the canal’s route, preserve its heritage, and promote recreation along this unique environmental corridor—from the heart of St Helens to the River Mersey Estuary at Spike Island, Widnes.
After the canal’s closure in 1963, industrial decline left it neglected and partly filled in. But restoration offers huge potential—reviving the canal could bring economic, recreational, environmental, and well-being benefits, linking communities and attractions while supporting regeneration across the region.
