Engineering Feasibility Study

In 1996 a comprehensive study was carried out with funding from the three Borough Councils [PR to check the details]. The report considered the viability of restoring the canal to full navigation; it’s a major project that will require significant funding. There are some engineering challenges and primarily these are low bridge / pipeline obstructions, M62 embankment, infilled canal sections, watercourses diverted along the canal and fuel pipeline / utility service constraints.

The good news is that there are potential solutions for all of them! There are many opportunities too, for example by reducing the depth and width of the canal it will allow precast concrete sections to be laid on the canal bed to reduce the volume of material to be excavated.
